IN THE PAST, 20? years ago bucky
"Sit up, Cassian," a gruff voice made the boy sit up tall. Dressed smartly in a dark suit, he sat in their parlour, green eyes darting to his siblings who snickered on the side. "How do I look mom?" Carina grinned, giving their parents a twirl in her new cream dress. "You look great honey," the woman gave her a smile, as she fixed up a vase of flowers, Cato already sauntering through the house as if he owned the place. "All right, remember your manners," his father spoke, "the Rayne family are allies of ours now, but you can't trust any other family in positions like these. Remember to keep your mouth shut about anything to do with our family business, be polite and if you don't have anything interesting to say, don't say anything at all." "Dad's telling you to shut up, Cass," Cato laughed, as Carina giggled next to him. Cass scowled, only to wipe his face of emotion when his father turned to him. "Don't disappoint me, Cassian," he frowned, "I'm allowing you to prove yourself worthy now that you're part of our society. Don't mess it up." "Yes father," the boy spoke dully, looking up as the doorbell rang and a servant greeted the other family at the door. His mother quickly moved towards the door and they could hear some quick chatter as his father's large frame entered the hallway as well. "Better behave," Carina crooned, "I wonder how long dad will lock you in the basement if you mess this up for him." "Shut up, Carina," Cassian sulked.

Luc's father was not one for lectures, which made the one Luc had received before leaving the house stand out that much more.
The Rotherhithes, Luc's father said, were business partners. Allies; not friends. There was a certain art to socializing with such folk that had to be learned first-hand. As the future head of the Rayne family and business, Luc had to master it as early as possible.
Luc nodded, taking it all in with serious eyes.
Luc's mother tsked and pressed a hand on Luc's shoulder. "Oh, Theodore, you're stressing him out," she said. She turned to Luc and her expression softened. "When did you get taller than me, anyway?" she smiled, straightening his jacket. His muted sapphire suit was made of the finest cotton money could buy, imported from Kulkan, and tailored to fit him perfectly.
The trip to the Rotherhithe's was quick, though it might have been nerves that made it quicker.
"Smile," his mother said as they were walking to the door. "Keep to small talk. Be yourself."
Then the door was opening, spilling golden light into the dusk.
Remembering his mother's words, Luc smiled as he entered the strangers' home.

"Theodore," Julius, the patriarch of the Rotherhithes, greeted with a smile, with a familiarity that–if neither families were raised in this society, would almost seem as if they were old friends. However, they were both raised in high society, it seemed, and it was clear that the familiarity was only on the outside. Welcoming the family to their home, the servants made haste in taking their coats and welcoming them into the parlour.
"I don't believe I've introduced you to my wife," Julius spoke smoothly, his hand around his wife's waist, "Maira, this is Theodore, he's head of the Raynes Trading Company."
"Pleasure," the woman spoke with a pleasant smile, shaking Theodore's hand, before gesturing to the parlour. "Could I get you two any drinks? We'll be having wine for dinner but an aperitif is always nice; would you prefer mimosas or a bellini? You must try our chef's recipe; it's absolutely delightful!"
It was then that Carina skipped over. "Good evening Lord Rayne, Lady Rayne," she greeted cheerfully, the child seemed unaware of the way children were meant to be seen, not heard, peering at Luc with a curious expression, before turning to her father, "father, shall I tell the servants to bring out the appetisers?"
"Yes dear," he spoke distractedly, before noticing the young boy, "Ah! This must be Alucard, no? I heard he's classmates with one of my boys; I'm sure the children would love to play while us adults get down to business. This is my youngest, Carina." He turned to the oldest boy, leaning on the doorframe with a boyish grin, before gesturing for him to come forward. "My oldest, Cato; he'll be leaving us for Pyxis soon; he's been selected for the Royal training programme."
"Cato, why don't you take your siblings and your friend upstairs? You can show them around the house and make sure they don't get into any trouble." The boy nodded, before grabbing Cassian by his collar and yanking him up to the younger boy's protest, but a look from their father silenced Cassian immediately.
"Come on," Carina grinned at Luc, grabbing his hand, "we'll show you around!"
