He swallowed again, the lump in his throat was feeling thicker, and harder to swallow down. He wasn't in the state of mind to question what was happening, much less why. Disoriented and panicking, he rubbed his eyes, before putting his head in his hands. Was he just paranoid? Was this something he should be worried about? It didn't make any sense. Carina must've told her. There'd be no other way she'd know.
Cassian felt a pang of hurt in his chest. Even if Carina did tell her–and this was already the result he was fixated on–why would she do this? Why would she offer something so kind, to assuage his fears, and then use this against him? It made no sense. Aela wasn't like this. She could be bitchy, she could be an absolute ass, but cruel? It was something he knew Carina was capable of, giving him comfort and immediately using something else against him, but he couldn't imagine Aela ever doing this, even if Carina told her what she'd do.
"She–" he hissed under his breath, "did she ever talk to you about the basement? Did she talk to you about her favourite way to get me in trouble? How she used to play this stupid game where she made me guess whether she was going to get me in trouble or not?"

"Carina never mentioned a basement," Aela said, watching him closely. She wanted to go to him, to comfort him, but she still harbored that secret fear that he would lash out at her. So she hung back, watching him with concerned eyes.
"She said... well she said she got you in trouble sometimes, and that your dad disciplined you. I already assumed as much. It sounded cruel. But no, nothing about a basement. I mean, I've been dreaming about a basement, and chains lately. I just didn't think it was related to you- all the things in my dream were my own fears, generally."

So it was a coincidence? Part of Cassian felt relieved that this wasn't some insane nightmare that his father had conjured to ruin them. So he was just being paranoid? This was insane; he couldn't have been so stressed that he was seeing and feeling things that didn't exist, right? He shook his head, trying to clear his mind.
"Maybe it's just a coincidence," he mumbled, sounding like he was trying to convince himself more than anything, "it's nothing. Just a weird fucking coincidence." He looked up at Aela, seeming more tired than ever.
"I...I just thought she told you what happened," he looked absolutely miserable, as his eyes focused on the blankets, "whatever you dreamed was just...really similar to something that happened when I was a kid. It's probably just nothing. Everyone has fears about spiders and getting locked up in tight spaces, right?"
He wasn't going to tell her how accurate it was, how he had been chained in the basement with the spider, and how he had soiled himself, how his siblings had laughed when his father's order finally came, to release him from his punishment, how utterly humiliating that was, how dirty he felt. It might not have been the worst punishment in the world, but he had never felt so inferior back then.
"I had a weird dream," he admitted. She was already here, and she was already telling him about her fears, "my dad...he had some unconventional uh...teaching methods. I dreamed he blinded me because I couldn't summon my powers right."

Aela's heart constricted at the sadness in his gaze, and the urge to go to him was stronger than ever. But she just... couldn't. It wasn't safe to get close to anyone. The closer she was to him, the scarier his anger became. The easier it was for him to hurt her.
Then he said something about his father blinding him. Aela stared at him openly, memories that oozed with fear and confusion crossing her mind once again. He had been open with his dream, so she supposed she could share a tiny bit with him, to help assuage his fear. "Yes, um... something like that happened to me as well, in my childhood." Not wanting to dwell, she skimmed past it. "I guess our memories are mixing in our dreams? It's strange, but not beyond the realm of magic and unknown powers. Nothing to worry about, I guess, in the end."

It took him a moment to really gauge what Aela had just said. "What....what do you mean your father blinded you?" he turned to her, confusion and–was that concern?–on his face. He always thought light fairies were...well, nice. They had that perception about them, after all. Light fairies were all about keeping the peace, and while he knew Aela's father had been cruel...blinding her? How the hell did that happen?
"If that happened...how can you see now?" he murmured softly, the concern was genuine, "I–I knew your father was...an asshole, for lack of a better word, but...why? What the fuck was he thinking?"
He couldn't understand it. His father's rage and anger and determination...it made sense at least. He had Cato and Carina to compare to, after all, but blinding your heir? His father had never done anything so permanent, he couldn't imagine how anyone could think that was okay.

"It wasn't permanent," she said quietly, turning her gaze to the window again. "I had decided I was going to run away. It was right after Lizzie was banished- I thought I could run away and join her family. That was one of his powers- blinding. He caught me before I made it off the grounds, and took away my sight so I couldn't leave."
She cleared her throat, shivering. "He gave it back eventually, when I promised I would never try to leave again. It was a rough few days. But it's all in the past, right?" She moved towards the bed, slipping under the covers in an attempt to warm up. "I'm fine now."
If fine meant she was struggling with issues of her past she had tried to repress, then sure, she was fine. "We should probably go back to sleep."

"That must've been terrible," he replied softly, still sitting up, the blanket now around his shoulders, "that was cruel, and you didn't deserve that." He frowned, as angry as he was, he couldn't help but feel the pang of sympathy in his heart. He knew what it was like, after all, to have parents with too high an expectation and an end that justified any means.
He slowly curled up, finally lying down again. Part of him was terrified to fall asleep again. Part of him just wanted to stay awake for the rest of the night. Instead of turning his back against Aela, he turned around.
A few moments of silence later, his voice spoke. "Are you sure you're okay?" he murmured. Maybe he was just projecting his own unease, but she was shivering, and he couldn't tell whether it was the cold or the dream.

"Thank you," Aela said, softening as she glanced over at him. She had been harsh in her judgment of him, she knew. But anything that reminded her of her father made an instant and lasting mark. "And I know you didn't deserve what your father did to you."
She didn't know the extent of it, or even the specifics really, but she could guess- and it was assuredly equally terrible. Funny, that two broken children would find their way to each other, even through an arranged marriage. "And I'm okay. Just really cold."
Part of it was the dream, and part of it was the chill in the night air. Funny how when she had borne these burdens alone she had never been this cold- but now that these memories were partially in the open, the blanket couldn't be warm enough. "I'll warm up soon, no worries."

Cassian simply nodded, the anger having faded into a weariness. Ne sighed. There was no way he'd be able to fall back asleep after that dream, he thought, especially after knowing what he knew. Looking over to Aela, he hesitated, before reaching out to her and pulling her closer to him. Despite his own shivers, his body was warm, even hot compared to Aela's.
If it had been any other time, perhaps he'd have just gone straight to sleep, suffering through his only spotty dreams and nightmares on his own, but he was so tired. There was no fight left in him anymore, at least not for tonight. "Is this better?" he asked quietly. In reality, he was just as touch-starved as Aela was, wishing that for once, he didn't have to deal with all of his pain on his own.
He wanted to be powerful. He wanted to be strong, to seem like the kind of man his father was–unflinching, unmovable, as if he himself had all the answers in the world–and he wanted people to know, that he wasn't just his father's son. That he had his own strengths, his own dreams and wishes and goals, that he didn't need the rest of the world to pity him, to sympathise with his pain, but spirits, he wanted to be cared for.
Sleep came easier that night. It had been dreamless sleep until they woke, and then it was back to acting as if that had never happened again. The stress was still mounting, as letters came back from Vela about the bill, and Cassian wasn't done with this conversation yet. His dreams were just getting worse. Weirder and weirder, as if they were no longer his own. How could he find a mistake in a dream if he wasn't even sure who sent them? As much as he blamed his father, this felt out of the ordinary. If his father truly wanted to plague him with nightmares, he wouldn't make them so that his own punishments seemed less terrifying, right?
The blinding still occupied his mind. He didn't understand it. Didn't understand how Aela just dismissed it as if it was nothing. None of this made sense, and still, a week later, he was marching up to Aela and tossing a file with some papers onto the table she was reading at. "Reconsider," he spoke once more. It had been a news article about a high visibility robbery on a well-known highway.

"Yes, that's better," Aela whispered, tucking her cheek against his shoulder, her hand pressed tentatively against his chest. She was a little ashamed of her lack of resolve- she had just vowed to keep her distance, and here she was, curling closer to him. It was just because she was cold, she tried to assure herself, but that wasn't the case. A caring touch melted her walls away, the facade of an adult she put up. The gentleness she had never received as a child broke her down, drew her in, made her forget who she was supposed to be and allowed her to focus on simply existing. It didn't take long for her to drift back to sleep.
Aela leaned forward to pick up the newspaper, skimming the article with a sigh. She wanted to help Cassian, she did. But she had been thinking about the blinding too, the utter lack of control she had felt. If she knew anything, it was that if you gave an abuser an inch, they'd take a mile. If she gave in here, Cassian's father would just demand more. And it was hard enough dealing with the ghost of her father- she would not allow herself to be controlled again.
"I cannot reconsider," she said, setting the paper down and looking up at Cassian with sympathy. "I am sorry. But one robbery, one outlier, is not enough justification for the massive overhaul of the highway system. We can just tighten security in that area- it's worked before."

He scowled at her, the anger still written in his face though it wasn't nearly as strong it was last week. Frankly, the exhaustion was wearing him down. The boy was pacing now, arms akimbo as he practically wore circles into the carpet. "You don't know what you're doing," he growled, "you're going to make an enemy out of the most powerful people in this country, do you really think you have it in you? To fight this useless fight?"
He was serious, his expression dark. "You're going to drag both of us into this mess because you're being stubborn? This doesn't make any sense at all. You're going against the entire council." Of course he knew the council only agreed because he had stood so strongly for it.

Perhaps he did have a point, and perhaps she was naive. But Aela was tired of being a puppet for someone else to control. "There's a difference between putting your foot down and making an enemy, Cassian," she said, sighing. "We can look for a compromise, perhaps through a diplomatic meeting. But we have more power than you're willing to hold."
The church may control a lot, but the monarchy was not entirely useless... yet. However, if Cassian continued down this road of immediately surrendering any decision, they might become obsolete. "I know we're young, but we can make a stand, together- but only if you don't throw in the towel so quickly."

His laugh sounded sarcastic. "I don't know about that," the sardonic look on his face said it all, as he dragged a hand long his face, before rubbing his jaw. He knew Aela meant well, but he knew how the others saw the monarchy. They were just symbols, really, of a unification that often felt forced. Aela might've been born in this situation, but Cassian wasn't. He had seen the world of the nobles and just how simple it was for his father to get anything done.
Maybe it was true, Dark fairies were always more willing to destroy things in order to build them back up again, and he wasn't going to underestimate just how much power these other little puppet strings had.
There were still storms in his head, his heart constantly seemed to beat louder, and he had seen the letter on his desk. The one stamped with a golden seal, a symbol of a sword on it. It was a letter from his father, and he knew what that entailed. A diplomatic meeting...he wasn't looking forward to that at all.
The young man just felt so lost. There was no end to this game they seemed to be playing, and the nightmares. He could see the bags under his eyes, the pallor of his skin...he was exhausted. Moving over to the cabinet in which he kept the whisky, he uncapped the bottle and took a swig. It was true that his little alcohol habit had taken a back seat the past couple of weeks–since the party, really–but spirits, he really could use something to take the edge off right now. It was just his luck that whatever he had kept in the nightstand, he had finished it already.
He sat on their bed, his elbows resting on his knees. "We're both going to regret this so much," the laugh that left his mouth sounded nearly hysterical from his exhaustion.

Aela let out a slow exhale, her mind churning to try and find a solution. She wanted to fight- Cassian didn't. She did not want to be controlled, and she did not want to control him, to force him to continue in this eternal struggle against his father. Perhaps there was an alternate solution to all of this?
The queen rose, setting the newspaper aside and moving to sit beside Cassian on the bed. After a moment, she reached out to touch his knee, trying to offer a bit of comfort to abate the exhaustion she could see in his eyes. "Maybe... well, maybe there's a way for you to get out of this?"
It was an impulsive thought, and probably an impractical one, but Aela couldn't help but see herself in Cassian. The urges of her childhood came back, and she sighed. "You can tell me if this is a stupid idea, but I... well, I could help you run away- fake your death, even. That's the only way you can get out of this marriage, out of this constant battle with your father. Then he can blame me for all the resistance he faces, and you'd be free. You could go somewhere else- I can give you enough money to live, though not as comfortably as you're used to."
She knew it wasn't ideal. It would be difficult to pull off, and Cassian would have to start over. But anything was preferable to seeing him like this. And maybe she could even extend an olive branch to her former self, make up for that day when she had failed to escape on her own by helping someone else get out.

An out? He looked up at Aela. Fake his death? Part of him truly wanted to entertain this idea, but part of him wanted to laugh. He admired Aela's imagination, that was for sure. She always seemed to have an infinite amount of strange ideas at least, and he couldn't help the look of amusement that flashed across his face.
Running away again? the voice in his head spoke, just like you always do. That's the only thing you're good at.
He was too tired for this. The fact that he was entertaining such a notion really said that much, he thought dryly. It wasn't even a bad plan too; she clearly didn't want him as king and he was just a liability here, and he could always restart. Do all the stupid shit he had always wanted to do. Head up to see Guivre. Sail as a pirate in Maline. Party in Nyre. His own political experience didn't meet the level she needed, and well, for such a young queen, it wouldn't be hard to be remarried...but then again, he'd be putting so much on everyone. He couldn't do that to his friends, could he?
Who'd care about you? the voice spoke ruefully, who cares about Cassian the failure? Weak. That's what you'll always be.
Would that voice just shut up? It was really starting to grate on his nerves. "I just need a break," he grumbled, leaning back and flopping onto the bed, "how the fuck do you deal with this all the damn time? If I'm not dead by the end of this diplomatic hearing of yours, I'll legally let you murder me for free."
It was sarcastic, but at least there was a bit of that humour still left in him. He rolled over, burying his face in the soft blanket. "I'm just so fucking tired," his muffled voice was quiet, as if he was only talking to himself.

Aela reached out again, awkwardly patting his back. How did one fairy comfort another? She'd read about it, but in person it was so... different. She felt so stilted in that arena. But she did feel an overwhelming sympathy for Cassian. She understood his frustration, and she would not begrudge him a life of freedom if that was what he wanted.
"I deal with it because I never had a choice. No one gave me one. But I'm offering one to you- so please think about it. Even if you think it's silly." If he stayed, she wanted it to be because he chose to. She wanted him to be different from her, when she was forced into this.
The light of the setting sun streamed in through the window, turning the room a vivid orange. Aela stood, stretching before heading to grab one of her nightgowns and go to bed. She wished she was better at this- at comforting Cassian, at being a good friend, but her lack of experience in those areas seemed doomed to plague her.
After washing her face and brushing her teeth, she slipped into her side of the bed, hand raising to pet Olive as the kitten walked up alongside her. "Get some sleep," she told Cassian. "Maybe there won't be any bad dreams tonight."

Cassian nodded. He was too tired to argue. He was trying, really trying, to let the shower wash away the rest of his worries, but his mind didn't seem to want that. It seemed like the more he wanted to relax, the more tense he was. Still, his body seemed to win the fight tonight, and as much as he dreaded going to bed, he simply curled up on his side of the bed, his breath quickly falling to an even rhythm as he drifted into his dreams.
"Aela! Come out now." Her father's voice filled the forest, seeming to echo all around her. Aela was crouched behind a bush, her long, skinny kid limbs curled into a ball to keep from rustling the leaves around her. "The maid told me what you told her. I know what you're planning. And it won't do at all, Aela. Do I have to remind you how a Princess should behave?"
Aela pressed her hand over her mouth, stifling the frightened sob that threatened to burst loose. All her grand plans of making it out of this life before her father tightened his grip beyond repair were slipping away from her.
There was a silence, then footsteps that faded away into the distance. Now was her chance- there was no turning back, since she already knew a punishment awaited her. Might as well try to finish her escape. She could scale the wall in the back corner of the land, and make her way into the city. Aela stood, making a break for safety.
Except her father was standing there, waiting. The auditory illusion he'd cast, of fading steps, disappeared, and Aela stopped dead in her tracks. "There you are," he said, raising an eyebrow. His gaze was cold and calculated and removed, like she was a math problem to solve rather than his daughter. "Now let's-"
Aela was running before he finished his sentence, desperately trying to make it to the wall. Suddenly, without warning, her vision cut out, leaving her in darkness. Disoriented and confused, she ran directly into a tree, gashing the thin skin of her forehead open in the process. She fell back among the leaves, scrambling to find any sort of direction.
Her father grabbed her then, by the curls she had kept long by his demand- the same ones she had cut short after his death. He dragged her to a standing position, then led her to the castle by her hair, ignoring the blood and tears that mingled on her face. Aela still couldn't see, looking around in blind terror for something, anything- a flash of light, even.
"Iki!" Her mother's voice came ringing out once they were inside. "What in the world-"
"Stay out of this, Celia. You agreed to let me handle her discipline."
"The girl's bleeding, Iki. Surely nothing is that serious. Let me call a maid to clean her up."
"I'll handle it, Celia. Go see to Edrea."
They made it back to what Aela assumed was her room, and her father threw her onto the floor. When she scrambled onto her feet, the first slap came, sending her careening backwards onto the bed. When she stood again, the second one came- and she stayed down that time, choking back sobs.
"How dare you?" He hissed, voice dangerously close to her ear. "What would people say if they knew the heir to the throne tried to run away over something as inconsequential as a maid and her family? You are an embarrassment to this family- you want to throw away all you have here to live on the streets like a commoner? You want to be powerless? Fine by me- live a few days like this, so you know what it’s like to be powerless."
He had left her then, and she had stumbled to the bathroom to wash the blood off her face. The next several days were dark and confusing and terrifying- the staff were instructed not to help her. More than once she spilled hot food onto herself, or ran into something in the hallway. She couldn't even figure out how to get to the gardens, to at least smell the flowers she loved so dearly- and reading was out of the question.
When her father came back, it was to a much meeker and compliant daughter. He restored her sight, touching her cheek gently. "That was for your own good, Aela," he told her as she squinted against the light. "Without the luxuries I've provided you with- sight included- you're nothing. You're powerless. I assure you that you don't want to live a life like that."
“Yes, father,” Aela whispered, a wave of deep resignation washing over her. This was life- this is how it would always be.
Cassian woke up with a start. It hadn't been a nightmare, per se, but did he really...dream as if he was Aela? God, it had been just as terrifying, knowing it wasn't real. He could feel the terror Aela had, the loneliness, the desperation to leave. Was that why she wanted him to go? Because she couldn't? He sat up slowly, before glancing to Aela's still sleeping form. Spirits, he thought, he hoped she was having a better dream than he was.

Aela was not having a better dream at all- hers also felt less like a dream and more like an unfamiliar memory...
It was the longest he had ever been locked up in the basement. Two weeks. His mother had been in Kama, visiting her sister. There was no one to get him out. He could barely remember what it was like, to see light, to see sunlight. Of course, a dark fairy could see clearly in the dark, but there was a difference. There was no color, no warmth in the darkness.
Cassian shivered in the cold, damp room, wearing only the pajamas he had been wearing when his mother left and the chain that chafed at his wrists. Why was dad like this? Why was he being punished? Cato and Carina were never treated like this. Even when their father punished them, he had yelled, he had locked them downstairs for an afternoon.
But two weeks? The boy was shivering, as he heard the sound of footsteps descending into the darkness.
“Have you managed to learn your lesson yet?” the man snapped, sitting on the other side of the cages that were often meant for the monsters and creatures of his experiments. When Cassian hesitated, the man stood up violently, flipping the table over in anger as the young boy flinched.
“You’re twenty two!” he snarled, “most children learn how to manifest their powers years before this! Your sister’s first was when she was ten! Why did the gods give me a son this useless?”
“I’m sorry father,” Cassian’s voice shook, his green eyes wide with terror, “please...I’m trying, I just...I can learn it, I swear–”
“–and you still haven’t!” the man snarled, “do I have to train you differently than the others? Cato had already perfected how to travel in shadows at this age and you can’t even manage a measly attack!”
The man sat down, his eyes glowing with disappointment, “you know I’m doing this for your own good, Cassian. How are you supposed to survive out there without any talents? Your brother’s been a fighter since birth and your sister picks up everything faster than everyone else. I have no use for a boy who can’t even do the simplest things on his own.”
“I’ll try harder,” Cassian was on his knees, begging, “I swear, I’ll do anything, just please…”
The man didn’t relent. “I see there’s only one way to push you further now,” he replied coldly, as he disappeared for a moment, before reappearing, unlocking the door of the cage.
Was he finally being let out? Cassian’s green eyes widened in hope, only to quickly turn into terror.
Gods, he thought as he almost pissed himself, what the hell was that?
A manticore. A young one; it couldn’t be older much than he was, but its flashing teeth and claws immediately made the young boy back up quickly. For a moment, his eyes met the creature’s and he could see his own terror reflected back to him.
“Let’s see how you fare with a creature like this,” his father sneered, “if you can’t even handle a manticore cub, you’re no use to me. Either it dies, or you die. I have no use for a powerless child.”
The sound of a whip cracked in the air, and whatever hesitation the creature had was gone, as a loud roar left his mouth. The lion-like monster snarled, licking its lips as it stared at the food that was now left out for him. Hunger was evident in its beady eyes.
Cassian looked back to his father, terror radiating from him as he felt his bladder empty in terror. He was scrambling up, trying to run, pulling as hard as he could on the chains.
Please, he could hear himself beg, please!
The creature’s fiery breath hit the wall right next to him, and he screeched, his wrists bleeding from how hard he was trying to pull away. If he had any impression that the creature had been a figment of his imagination, it was certainly different now that he felt the heat licking at his shoulder briefly. Tears were running down his face, as the creature crouched, and pounced, teeth meeting his shoulder.
He blacked out, feeling something erupt from within him. Tendrils of darkness flowed from within his chest, his eyes glowing purple as they thrashed and whipped around, and the next thing he knew, he was waking up again, dazed and confused.
Where was he? He blinked, feeling completely drained, the chains no longer around his wrists. He was clean again...his clothes had been changed, and he was sitting at the table, a blanket around his shoulders. There were bandages on his shoulder and wrists.
“You did well, son,” a man’s voice came from behind him, and he looked up to his father, his eyes no longer angry, but...proud? What happened?
He turned to look at the cage that he had been locked in, only to see red. Blood, splattered all around, and whatever was left of the manticore, it was in pieces. Flesh and torn bone all over the place. He felt his stomach lurch, as his hands flew to his mouth. He did that?
“You’re a dark fairy, son,” the man responded, as he left the door open, giving him permission to leave, “you’ll be put into private lessons from today onwards.”
Cassian sat still, waiting for the footsteps to disappear, before emptying the contents of his stomach on the ground.
Aela jerked awake only a few minutes after Cassian, nausea clutching her stomach. She had never seen such gore in her life, and to have it haunt her dreams was deeply unnerving. Had she been... Cassian? Was that a memory? It was too horrifying to be real, right? Her hand flew over her mouth as she retched, sitting up to try to stall the vomit. It was only then that she noticed Cassian awake beside her, watching her with concern.
"Can I have some water, please?" She asked, still queasy.

He didn't even notice how long he had been watching Aela sleep, until suddenly, she jerked upwards, her hands immediately flying to her mouth as a retching sound came from her throat. Cassian's eyes immediately widened, and for a moment, he really thought she was going to vomit. Was everything okay? He could feel a strange energy in the air, thrumming for a moment as if the shadows were really alive. What was going on here?
He was already reaching for the water when she asked, and he quickly poured her a glass.
"Is everything okay?" he blinked at Aela, as flashes of the dream resurfaced. The memory, of blood and tears pouring from her eyes, made him shudder. Did she have another nightmare? Just from seeing what that bastard had done made his blood boil. He had to tell Aela about this, right? That he had a dream of her? Was it real?
At first, he had assumed it was his own paranoia; there was no way there was some kind of magic making them share dreams, right? His father wasn't even in town yet. It couldn't be...
But could it? He had never been able to do what the rest of his family were so good at. Nightmares were complex to create. It required a certain understanding of fear, and a certain ability to rise over it, one that Cassian never had.
He shook off the thought, as he turned to Aela. She really didn't look great, even in the dark, he could tell from the way her face looked, ashen as if she had seen a ghost. Tentatively, he reached out to rub her back lightly.
"Hey," his voice was soft, "it's...just a dream. He can't hurt you here." He could guess what she dreamed about; Aela's father was terrifying.

Aela chugged the water and set the glass aside, working to slow her labored breathing. Cassian's touch shook her out of her stupor, and she instinctively turned to him, arms winding around his waist as she buried her face against his chest, desperate for a gentle touch, for tender reassurances.
"There was much blood," she mumbled, shuddering. "And gore... I've never seen real violence before that. There wasn't anything left of the manticore. Did he... did he really lock you in the basement for two weeks?" Aela knew that that was a memory, but not one of hers. She just had to confirm if it was real, and if it was... poor Cassian.
If it was true, then he needed a gentle touch as much as she did. Her father had been controlling and had isolated her from others, but the whole of Cassian's family seemed cruel. Aela had never thought of her father as cruel- just as someone who never really cared for her emotions.
