@nostalgic
Cassian's cloak was flapping in the wind as he returned to their bedroom, eyes blazing and jaw set, the irritation practically radiating off of him in waves. What. the. hell. The past few weeks had been uneventful, to say the least. After the party, he and Aela had certainly gotten along better. They were no longer at each other's throats all the time, and some could even call it civility for a while. They were friendly, greeted each other when they saw each other in the halls, even made small talk sometimes, and frankly, it had been peaceful. They weren't best friends all of a sudden, and the awkwardness hadn't all faded from their little tryst together, but it had been the closest thing to friendship since the two had met.
Of course, good things never lasted. Slamming open the doors to their room, he scowled at the queen. "What the fuck?" he seethed, trying to reign in his frustration. He didn't mean to snap at her like this, but sometimes, it seemed like she was just constantly in his way.
The council had proposed a bill, one that would give the Rotherhithe company better control of the roads. After all, they were now considered the security department for the whole kingdom. It would allow his father's men to be stationed in different cities in case of anything, and it would station his men within Pyxis as well, allowing them to open an office in the royal city. The last time the man visited the castle, he had taken Cassian aside, and told him how important the bill was and how it needed to be passed, his words leaving out the or else. He had proposed it, advocated for it, and even convinced some of the less-certain members of its importance.
Aela had just veto'ed it. No. That was the answer she gave to the council. No, no discussions needed.
Oh his father was going to be furious; just the thought of that made Cassian's skin crawl. "You can't just say no without any reasons, Aela," he snapped, "what the fuck? Do you know how important this bill is? How dangerous it'll be without it?"
Do you know how dangerous it is to me, without it? the voice in the back of his head echoed. He ignored it.

Aela had been leaning out the window, letting the sun warm her face, when her husband slammed into the room. She turned to him with guarded golden eyes. She had thought... well she had thought they could be friends, after all this. But now Cassian seemed to be back to simply being angry with her.
She did not do well with anger. It reminded her too much of her father. Most of the time he had simply been cold and removed, but the few times he'd lost control had been the worst for her. Aela could handle Cassian's harmless quips and sullen behavior, but this unbridled anger brought back the worst of her memories, and her walls went right back up.
Plus, he was wrong about this. "This bill is nothing more than a power grab and an attempt to monopolize the security industry," she said, crossing her arms over her chest. "You certainly know that. The reasoning it offered was baseless, and I will not let even my council come under the control of your father. The roads are fine! There are no reports of excessive danger, no need to give so much power to your father's company."
She had thought this through, and her reasoning was logical. It was mostly a baseless bill. She couldn't understand his anger. Didn't he hate his father?

Aela was right. Aela was right and Cassian knew it, but it didn't matter. He had spent too long trying to argue for this, and to be betrayed like this...he could feel the frustration just eating at him. Perhaps if it had been anything else, he'd easily sit down and have a discussion about it, but there was one thing he knew well. No one ever said no to his father. Even if he knew Aela was the one to turn it down, the consequences would come crashing down onto him. He dreaded knowing that at the moment, there were probably messengers heading back to Vela to give the man the disappointing news.
Spirits, he wasn't just going to kill the messenger, he was going to kill him too. The feeling of fear was so familiar, but each time, it felt so new again, the way his fingers tingled from the anticipation, the way his throat seemed to close in on itself, the sweat on his brow. He knew his own anger was simply just a reflection of all of this, but how was that supposed to help him? It didn't change anything.
"That's not true," he snapped, "the only reason why you think they're safe now is because he's been doing all the hard work keeping it safe! Do you really think if we left everything unattended, that people would just do as they're told? If you even appreciated anything your humble servants do, you'd give them a space to rest for the night; how fucking hard is that?"
He was wringing his hands as he sat down on the bed, pulling his hair back, trying to keep his anger in check. He turned to Aela with a glare so fierce it spoke as a command. "Reconsider," his voice was icy.

The glare, and the ice in his voice, were so familiar that she could almost see her father sitting where he was, staring down at her. Aela had to resist the overwhelming urge to flinch away- even approaching a year dead, her father's memory haunted her.
If Cassian was disappointed, why couldn't he just come speak to her as an equal? Why did he feel entitled to come in here and demand things of her? Was it too much for her to ask for one fairy in her life who would treat her not as a child to be ordered around, or as a monarch too removed to relate to, but as someone worthy of respect and decent conversation.
"Fine, I'll reconsider," she said in an equally icy tone, painful memories and bitter disappointment making her cold. She lifted a finger to her chin, tapping it as if she were actually thinking about it. "Hmm, still vetoed. Better luck next time."

For a moment, there was a look of hurt on Cassian's face, but it quickly morphed into anger once again, the boy's face turning red as he kicked the foot of the bed. Oh boy, he was going into a temper tantrum. Spirits, why couldn't she understand? Why was it that everyone else saw reason except for her? He needed this. There was no way his father was going to stand down, to let some kids decide what needed to be done. If he didn't give in now, it was only going to get worse for him.
After all, the man didn't place him here for nothing, and despite all of the empty threats Aela gave, about their divorce and kicking him out, he knew she didn't have the power to do so. His father, however, he shuddered at the thought. The man was practically best friends with the church; his money funded plenty of their passion projects after all, and if Cassian couldn't do his job here...
well, anything could happen, right? He was sure that if Aela had the choice, she'd go with it. The girl had no loyalty to him, not when he had practically made her life miserable. Even if, in the off chance that she felt bad enough for him to let him stay, the church was still more powerful than either of them could ever be.
Couldn't she see that? That they were nothing, compared to those who truly pulled their puppet strings? That it was easier to live and let live, to give up some things and keep the rest, than to lose it all and be thrown out with nothing?
"You have to reconsider again," his voice wavered just slightly, "I'm not going to let this go, Aela."

Aela had been trained to be Queen- if all her father's beatings had taught her anything, it was that she was supposed to be in control. Not her father in law. Her father had trusted her to lead the kingdom, not some business executive he had never met.
She understood partially why he was so insistent. "Cassian, you live here now. You are the king. Not your father. You need to put your foot down for once. Will you continue to let him rule over you when you rank far above him?"
The Queen was a hypocrite and she knew it. She had never once stood up to her own father, and perhaps that was why she was determined Cassian would do it now. Perhaps he would find the courage she never had, and perhaps in a way she would find her own closure from that. "I will not reconsider, so you need to let it go."

Cassian stared at her, blinking owlishly at Aela for a moment, as if taking some time to comprehend what she was saying.
"Oh no, you don't get to say that to me," he seethed, the disbelief written all over his face. Where the hell was all this when he asked her about Lizzie? Where the hell was this whole 'standing up against her father' when they got married? For a moment, he couldn't even find his voice, so completely baffled at how Aela could even say this to him.
"How dare you," he snarled, as he clenched his fists, "how dare you say anything when you have no idea about anything outside that fucking world inside of your head? Weren't you the one who said everything your father did was for your own good? And you're turning that on me now? So I have to reject my family for you now? If you're so much better than me, then why didn't you say anything when he was forcing you to marry me huh?"
Spirits he was going to pop a vein. He couldn't do this, if he was in this space any longer, he was either going to say or do something worse, and as much as he hated Aela right now, there were some things that couldn't be taken back.
His jaw clenched hard, he sucked in a deep breath, before grabbing his coat. He needed a walk. He needed to punch something. He needed Ezra. He needed anything else other than to be in the same space as Aela right now.
"I need some air," he growled, "can't deal with this right now."

Aela sank down in a chair as he left, relieved that he wouldn't be around to see the way her shoulders trembled. For half a moment she had been afraid Cassian would hit her, and that hurt almost as much as if he had. Don't cry. Don't cry. Don't cry.
It was too late. The tears were already flooding down her cheeks, dripping onto the fabric of her skirt. His words were true, and they cut deep. Worse, though, was the fury in his voice. How could she have thought that could be friends? He was as angry as her father- only more often.
That was unfair of her, but Aela could not be logical when intense anger directed at her was involved. She shut down, instinctively, in order to protect herself. If she were better at opening up, she could speak openly to Cassian. She could tell him that she was sorry, that she only wanted him to better than she could be, that she hated knowing how much his father scared her.
As it was, she isolated herself completely. Openness and emotions meant vulnerability. Vulnerability meant weakness. And Sutcliffes were not weak. Cassian did not return until late that night, when Aela was asleep, fingers clenching the sheets and jaw clenched, apparently in the midst of a bad dream.

He needed to cool down. There were just too many things running through his head. He hated this. He hated being so angry all the time, he hated how he had just reacted so violently, he hated how they had been on the cusp of developing something akin to friendship and he had probably thrown it out the window along with everything else. It really was a curse, wasn't it? To be put in this position? To be born as a Rotherhithe and to be completely unable to carry out any of his duties?
Most of all, he hated how, when it all came down to it, nobody would want him. His father clearly had no use for him if he couldn't even get this to work, and once the man was tired of him, it would only be time before Aela would be rid of him too. She had no reason to keep him around on her own will; he was just a liability. Perhaps if he had been a better man, this wouldn't be so difficult, but he was who he was.
Never enough, the voice in his head spoke. Never enough. He just wished he had someone to talk to. Someone who truly understood. Aela clearly judged him more than he thought she did, and well, as much as he found Ezra attractive and absolutely enthralling, he wasn't someone who knew everything. He wasn't someone who grew up with him. He missed his friends more than ever.
Cassian sat in the courtyard, trying to still his breathing. He hated to admit it but Aela was right. He really should apologize, but he couldn't. He just couldn't. It took him what seemed like forever to finally calm down. He wasn't going to let this go either. If Cassian knew one thing, it was that his resolve had to be stronger than Aela's. It had to be.
Steeling himself, he finally returned to the room, only to find the other girl asleep. No use in talking now, he thought ruefully, as he turned in for the night. It didn't take long for sleep to take him, but it was the darkness that grew.
He felt like he was under water. Or at least, it sounded like he was underwater. The air clung to him like wet clothes, pulling him down, his body felt so heavy. The ringing in his ears made his head hurt. The worst thing was the pressure in his chest. It was crushing him. He stood in this vast empty space, looking for something, anything–there! It was another person. He ran towards the silhouette, calling out for its attention.
The man turned towards him. What? Dark curls and green eyes...it was like looking into a mirror. What the fuck, he gasped, taking a step back, as the other version of him backhanded him across the cheek. He fell to the ground, looking up in horror.
It was his father. Cassian, it howled, how dare you fail? How dare you come home empty handed?
Fear filled his lungs and next thing he knew, he was drowning. The walls were closing in, and he could feel the pressure in his chest dragging him under. He struggled, trying to pull away–
A gasp and he was awake in the dark room, darker than usual. What the hell was that?

Aela's dreams were about as bad- she was stuck somewhere- a basement? Again? It was oppressive and fear-inducing and overwhelming. The walls seemed to be closing in, suffocating her. She tried to lift her hands, and found them shackled to the floor, weighed down by the heavy chains.
Weak! A voice seemed to echo in her memory, a voice she didn't recognize. You're weak! Aela flinched back as her family appeared from the shadows- mother, father, sister. Only... she didn't recognize them. They were strangers to her- and she to them.
Her parents withered and died in a matter of seconds, and her sister's impassive eyes stared at her. "Rea- Rea, please," Aela whispered, reaching forward. "Help me."
"I'm not allowed to. Besides, I don't know you."
"Yes you do! I'm your sister."
"No, you're not. You're the Princess- the to-be Queen. You aren't anything else, to anyone, and you never will be."
With that, Rea aged rapidly, crumbling into dust in front of her. Aela let out a sob, wrapping her chained arms around herself.
"Someone!" She called, looking into the never-ending darkness. "Anyone?" But it was useless. No one was looking for her. No one wanted to find her.
Aela jerked awake only a moment after Cassian, a choked cry spilling from her throat. Once the initial fear faded, her eyes focused, only to realize the shadows were creeping closer. "Cassian..." she whispered. "What's going on?"

He was dazed, and he had this feeling that something else was in the room with him. It was an unsettling feeling that someone was watching him. He tried to sit up, to go grab a glass of water maybe, but he couldn't move. Fuck. Why couldn't he move? His eyes flickered to his fingers, trying to move them, but it was like nothing wanted to listen. He could feel a weight on his chest. What was going on?
His eyes moved towards the feeling on his chest, and he could feel his throat tighten. What the hell was that? He didn't know if it was real, but he swore he could see something, a darkness sitting on his chest, its grin so feral, it's eyes glowing and dark at the same time, claws reaching to dig into his shoulders. Holy shit, he was going to die. There was a demon sitting on his chest, and spirits, was this his father? Was the man truly so powerful when he was angry, that he could send a creature like this after him? How could he be paralyzed by––
"Cassian!" the whisper almost made him cry out in relief, as suddenly, he could move once again. He had never felt such fear in his life, as the shadows seemed to melt into the earth. Despite everything, he had never truly experienced sleep paralysis. He hoped he'd never experience something like this again.
Blinking, he turned to see Aela's fearful expression. Why was she up? He frowned, still feeling the pit of resentment like a seed in his stomach. Even worse, he probably woke her up with the nightmare. As he nodded awake, he could feel the embarrassment well up inside him. He just wanted to disappear right now.
"Go back to sleep," he mumbled, blinking tiredly, "it's just a bad dream." It was still night, and by the gods he didn't want to handle this right now.

Aela did not see exactly what Cassian did- only seeing the shadows that disappeared and receded so quickly that she couldn't be sure she wasn't still half-asleep. She wanted to be comforted, to be held- the foolish leftover wishes of a scared little girl. But she hadn't been held until now, and she wasn't about to start begging like a child. She was a Queen.
"It was," she mumbled, laying back down. What an odd way to comfort someone who'd had a bad dream. She had at least gotten him tea. She wasn't aware he was talking about his own dream, instead assuming he was simply still angry with her. "Sorry... that I woke you up," she grumbled, eyes closing as she let herself drift back into sleep.

He tried to go back to sleep. He really did.
Cassian couldn't be sure if he was asleep or not. He was in the castle, wandering the endless maze of halls, in and out. It was dark. The floors were slippery, as if it had just rained. He could hear the thunder rumbling in the distance. Why were the hallways so long, and why did everything seem so tall? He felt so...small. Like he was but a child, finding his way through the labyrinth.
The thunder was getting louder now, nearer. He shuddered as he heard the loud bang, his green eyes wide as the windows clattered, the wind growing stronger. He felt as if the walls themselves were shaking, shuddering in the storm.
Where was everybody? He was holding onto the stuffed rabbit he had since he was a child. Mister Rudy, he had named the bunny, but even the rabbit seemed huge, too big to hold completely in his arms.
Mom? he called out, Antonio? Rissa? Wait, they weren't in the castle. His heart sank. No, they were at home...but why was Mister Rudy in his arms? Suddenly the thunder struck and he could almost feel it, the sound felt so close, and his breath hitched as he immediately rushed into one of the rooms to hide.
Look at him, a voice sneered, and Cassian immediately turned around, his back against the door. He was back at home, as an older boy stood above him, a laugh ringing out from his mouth. The laugh sounded cruel. Look at mister pee pee, the boy sneered, how are you thirty and still peeing your pants? Behind him, the little girl giggled.
It wasn't my fault, Cassian stammered, I....I couldn't find a bathroom...the basement–
Aw, poor little piss baby, couldn't hold it all in, Carina repeated after Cato in a singsong voice, do you think dad knows?
Don't tell dad, Cassian begged, please don't tell dad.
The taller boy laughed, delight sparkling in his eyes. Oh, don't worry, dad already knows. He's looking for you right now.
Cassian woke up once again. What the hell was going on with his dreams? He didn't get up, simply curling up into a ball, pulling the blanket in tighter. His dad couldn't touch him. Not here. Not right now. So why were all these dreams just as bad, if not worse, than the ones he had back home?

Aela's dreams were not as terrifying for the rest of the night, but they were deeply unsettling. Children ran around her, giggling and teasing, but when she reached out to touch them, they disappeared. Were they her children? She couldn't tell. All she knew was that they were always out of reach.
She and Cassian spent a good amount of time arguing the next day. Aela kept her physical distance from him, and rebuffed all his arguments with sound logic and a removed tone. It was like they were back to square one, with her robotic responses and routines, but it was... worse. In the beginning she had been awkward but open to friendship. Now, she was completely closed off, disinterested. Protected.
The nightmares returned the next night, full force. Back to the basement, this time with Lizzie standing just out of reach of her shackles. Aela reached out again, only to be stared at with disinterest.
"You never came to say goodbye."
"I-I couldn't, Lizzie. I wasn't allowed- you know that."
Lizzie turned and left without another word, leaving Aela alone in the darkness. There was a noise beside her, and Aela turned quickly, falling backwards when the the many faceted eyes of a spider emerged from the darkness. Fear washed over her, and warmth spread between her legs, soaking her dress.
Aela shot up again from her dream, breathing labored. Not realizing Cassian was awake in the ball beside her, she got up, moving quickly to the window to get a breath of fresh air. "Why did I pee myself?" She mumbled, knocking her forehead gently on the stone wall. That was strange- it had felt like a memory, not a dream, but she never remembered doing that.

Cassian already knew there was no point in trying to sleep. Exhaustion from the day weighed down on him like anchors. He really thought he had more fight in him. He had been so convinced, so ready to argue with Aela, but each timehe tried, he knew there was no way he could wiggle out of it. He felt so...trapped.
There was just no way he could win. He couldn't go back. He wouldn't go back to living with his family again. He had been silent, sullen the whole day, the bags under his eyes now quite obvious. He knew Aela was avoiding him, and frankly, he couldn't look her in the eye. Every time he did, it just reminded him how fragile his position here was. There was no way he'd be able to redeem himself, either with her or with his father.
It was hopeless, he thought as he slipped into bed the next night, with no words left for his wife. He could feel the darkness sitting on his chest again, and spirits, if he had to deal with that demon again...
He tried. He tried so hard to stay awake, but it was impossible. His eyes were already drooping when he slipped into the comfort of his covers.
You must learn, the man was just a light, infinitely tall and radiating power, so much that Cassian took a step back, grimacing. It was like staring into the sun.
I'm trying, his voice felt so small, I'm trying dad, I just–I can't...I just need more time, please.
Weak, the voice boomed angrily, weak! Cassian took another step back. He knew what was going to happen. The man always had something up his sleeve, perhaps turning into a monster, or making him guess between a real one and a nightmare, or humiliating him in front of his siblings, or worse, locking him in the basement overnight, chained up like some kind of animal–
He felt his body turn, running away, his own feet carrying him subconsciously, but the man grabbed him by the neck, and suddenly, he was looking at his father's eyes. Except...it didn't glow purple. The man glowed bright white. A hot white. He could feel his eyes burn, his vision turning red and then...nothing.
Dad? he cried out, where are you? Where was everybody? Was he...was he blind? He couldn't see anything, he couldn't move, there was nothing. He woke up with a gasp, and for a second, the room was so dark he thought he had truly gone blind. Scrambling up, he his hands felt for the pillows, the blankets, as the shadows of the room receded. The crackling black dust, the remnants of his power, still seemed to remain in the air like a black cloud.
His eyes scanned the room. And he thought last night was bad. His eyes met the form of Aela, standing by the window.
"What are you doing?" his voice rasped, cracking as he heaved for another breath, "shouldn't....shouldn't you be asleep?"

"Bad dream," she mumbled, turning back to him. "You too, I guess?"
She had not noticed the shadows creeping behind her, too focused on getting her head clear with the fresh air. Still, he looked terrible. Obviously something was bothering him.
"Maybe it's all the disagreement," she said with a shrug, letting the cool night air blow on the back of her neck. "I know I threatened you with an annulment, a while ago, but I didn't mean it. Even if we fight... you'll have a place here."
Aela was not heartless. She would not turned this troubled boy back over to his father, even if she was uneasy around him now.

It was kind of weird, for both of them to be having a nightmare at the same time. It couldn't just be a coincidence, right? If Cassian hadn't been this tired, this drained, he would've dwelled more on this, but he was finding it difficult to even think through his thoughts. His dreams had been bad before, but his father had never blinded him before. Where did that come from? How the hell could that happen? It was all a little too unnerving, the fact that it had felt so real, so real that he had woken up thinking he was truly blind.
He could feel a tension in his jaw and as she spoke, he couldn't help but shiver in the night, his jaw chattering. What was going on with him...and why did it seem like Aela could read his thoughts? He felt more than just a little unnerved, but he only nodded at her words, trying to suck in deep breaths, to calm down. It was nice, that she truly felt that way, but despite the fact that he should've been reassured, he...wasn't.
Whatever was going on, he needed to put a stop to it. Part of him wondered if it really was his father, that he knew exactly how to send these sort of nightmares here, to make him paranoid, to turn them against each other. His own heightened sense of fear was almost palpable despite it all.
He needed to get his mind off his own dream. "What did you dream about?" he asked softly, pulling the blankets closer to himself. Perhaps if she talked about her own dreams, he could get his mind off his.

"It was a strange dream," Aela said, closing her eyes to remember it more clearly. Her nightgown fluttered in the breeze, the fear of her dream creeping along her skin and giving her goosebumps. "I was shackled in a basement. Lizzie was there... but she left."
Aela shuddered, opening her eyes again. "Then there was a spider- a really big one. I got scared... and I peed myself. I had to get up to make sure I hadn't wet the bed. It's strange though, since I've never peed myself or dreamed about it before. It felt so lifelike."

If Cassian's face could get any paler, it certainly would. His face seemed like a sheet of paper. No way. There was no fucking way...right? What the fuck was happening? He sucked in a breath between his teeth, his green eyes wide as he stared at Aela. Really stared. There was no way this was still part of the dream...right? He backed away, his back touching the wall.
Find the mistake. Find the mistake. Find the mistake.
"I–" he opened his mouth, and closed it, "what–" He swallowed thickly. "Fuck, I'm still dreaming, right?" his voice sounded weak, "holy shit, this is some weird fucking shit."
He could remember that night. His father had caught him trying to sneak out of the house in the middle of some dinner party, and he had been furious. He had never seen the man so angry. It had been the first time he had been chained up, locked in a cage like a dog, and the spider...he shuddered.
"Carina told you, didn't she?" his terror was turning into anger, a desperate attempt to figure out what was going on, "she told you what happened. Fuck, I knew it. I fucking knew she was just fucking with me." He turned to Aela with a baffled look on his face. "Why the hell...am I dreaming all of this or are just fucking with me right now? Because this really isn't funny."

The anger again. Aela shifted back, leaning back onto the windowsill to put more distance between them. "I'm not messing with you," she said, as confused as he was. "Carina told me what? What are you talking about?"
She wasn't sure of his own dreams, if this was just some coincidence. Were they... sharing dreams? Aela's brain wasn't quite working as it did in the daytime, groggy in the darkness of night. "Did that... happen to you? But you didn't even know Lizzie."
