Aela wasn't looking at him, her gaze turned up to the starlight. She was used to having this time alone, with her husband being a late sleeper as he was, but it wasn't so bad with him awake. There was almost... almost a sense of companionship between them.
She hummed faintly, counting on her fingers the number of days her cousin would be staying. "Three more, including today. She's been here for five already, I believe? Yes, five. We're planning to ride today. She's a better rider than me, surprisingly. There's a nice trail leading through the grounds."
The Queen did not extend an invitation, mostly because she fully believed Cassian would bury his day in the bottom of a bottle. The thought was not as judgmental as it normally was- these nightmares could be indicative of a more haunting childhood for him than she'd originally believed. Still, she wouldn't exactly mind if he came. Yesterday hadn't been so bad.

Three more days huh? That wasn't so bad. He was silent as she spoke of their plans. Riding, huh? That was something he could enjoy, at least. There was never much need to truly be on horseback back home in Vela, sailing made much more sense when one was one the coast, but like every other child, it was a must-learn in school. To be honest, he enjoyed it. A lot. Horses were pretty cool creatures, and it always felt a little more free, to just be able to ride into the glen or something.
One of the few things he was allowed to keep from his home was the horse he grew up riding. He didn't mind visiting the stables, at least.
"That sounds nice," he replied, "I suppose today's as good a day to go for a ride as any. I have yet to explore the woods...I suppose I'll meet you by the stables after breakfast then?" It was perhaps a bit presumptuous to assume he was invited, but then again, Jessi did say she wanted him to join, and well, as long as he kept his big mouth shut, he could probably go an afternoon without arguing with his dear wife. She didn't seem nearly as insufferable while the child was around. As long as it wasn't just the two of them together, things seemed...fine.
He had made up his mind. He pulled the covers off, as he stood up, already heading to the closet to find something to wear, before glancing to Aela. "Did you need the bathroom?" he asked, "if not, I'm going to take a shower first. I'm not really sure what your morning routine is."

There was an unbidden thought that flashed into Aela's mind, that perhaps they could shower together- but where had that come from? They had not been... intimate... in weeks now. She was loathe to admit it but she still found Cassian attractive- something about the languorous way he moved and the quick- if not mean- wit he had made her feel more alive than the other people in the palace, even if it infuriated her.
Maybe it was because she had lost her virginity to him? Who knew. All Aela knew was that it these unprompted, unwelcome thoughts and sensations were completely embarrassing. "You can go- I showered last night," she mumbled, pressing her chin deeper into her palm. No distractions.
When they were both dressed and ready, she walked with him out to the gardens, where Jessi was waiting in her riding gear. "I got us breakfast from the kitchen!" She called as soon as she spotted them, holding up a picnic basket of goodies. "We can ride and then eat a picnic!"

Whatever Aela was thinking, it was clear that Cassian hadn't noticed her blush or the way she mumbled her words. He shrugged, grabbing a towel and tossing it over his shoulder as he stepped into the bathroom. Under the heat of the shower, he allowed the water to roll down his back along with his thoughts. Despite his lie about enjoying swimming, he had always enjoyed being in water, more so in a relax and unwind sort of way. The heat simply allowed his shoulders to relax a little, the tension washing away for the few moments he had to simply exist.
Stepping out with a towel wrapped around his waist, he quickly got changed, drying his hair with the towel as much as he could. His curly locks were still a bit damp as he stepped out, dressed a little more casually than he usually was. They walked to the gardens in a much-welcomed silence, only interrupted by Jessi's excitement.
Breakfast in a basket, hm...not a bad idea at all. A picnic was a familiar thing for Cassian at least; he and his friends often grabbed food from whoever's kitchen was closest after classes and headed out to the woods outside of the city, or the cliffs a little farther away, sitting there and laughing about stupid things, watching Eridan try to flirt with whatever girl he was interested that week, watching the sunset with Dante...
He shook himself out of his thoughts. No point in reminiscing over the past; it was only going to ruin his day. "Sounds like a great plan," he mused, giving young Jessi a smirk, "I hope you brought extra jam sandwiches. Riding always makes me hungry; if we're not careful I'll end up eating all the food."
Whatever vulnerability he had shown just moments before was completely gone, replaced by the impassive mask that his public persona provided.

Jessi giggled, grabbing Aela's hand as they walked to the stbales. "I packed plenty. You know, I had a dream that I was a gnome," she said, to no one in particular. "And I was stuck in a garden and I was yelling but no one could hear me. Isn't that scary?"
Aela chuckled, squeezing Jessi's hand. "That is pretty scary. But at least it was just a dream, right? You get to wake up and spend the morning on a lovely ride with us out in the sunshine."
Jessi nodded sagely. "That's true. I can't wait to see the horses!"
It wasn't too long of a walk to the stables, where they did in fact see horses. Aela and Jessi, being the nobility they were, were in their element around the creatures. It didn't take long for them to feed and pet their individual mares, saddle up, and mount up outside the stables.
"We should race!" Jessi said brightly. "I know I'll get first, so whoever loses out of you two... hmmm... has to give the other one a kiss!"
"That ends in a kiss either way, Jessi," Aela said, with a laugh, ignoring the damned butterflies in her stomach. "But- uh, I'm fine with that. If Cassian is."

Cassian chuckled lightly at the young girl's dream, but when Aela spoke, it sounded like the child wasn't the only one she was speaking to. He glanced towards the queen for a moment, before turning to the child again. "You know, they say that there's a way you can control your dreams, right?" he mused, keeping his voice purposefully light. "They say that if you're dreaming and you want to gain control of what happens, you just need to figure out what's wrong with the dream. Once you can point it out, you can make yourself do anything there. They say you can even summon unicorns and fly if you really want to."
It wasn't completely true, but it was something dark fairies learned quickly. Control. A fairy without it could be destructive and accidentally destroy things. A dark fairy without it could accidentally destroy themselves. The need to stay calm and to rein everything in was one of the first lessons they were taught. Unfortunately for him, he had never quite gotten the hang of control. His father's teaching methods had been...unconventional, after all.
He brushed it off. A dream was just a dream. As they neared the stables, he was greeted by the black mare. It really had been a while, he thought as he stroked the horse's mane. "Hey Safa," he murmured, feeding her a baby carrot. It didn't take long for him to saddle his own horse, quickly following the two girls out of the stables.
A race, huh? He rolled his eyes at the conditions. "Kids these days," he snorted, humour laden in his voice, "always trying to one up the adults." Without waiting for them to start, he already had his horse at a gallop. "Ready, set, go, see you at the finish line!" he called out with a laugh, not waiting for them to start. He was just as competitive as anyone else, but the good thing about being a dark fairy was that he never really gave a shit about things like 'rules' or 'cheating.' He glanced back to them with a shit-eating grin. "Hurry up or you'll be kissing my dust!"

"Cheater!" Jessi called, setting her horse after his. Aela was quick to follow, faintly amused by the whole thing. The ride was a pretty one, among the well-cultivated and extensive grounds of the palace in the spring air and sunshine. However, the trail wasn't entirely clear at places, winding through mud and thickets once they got farther away.
Aela was pleased to see that Cassian had taken a wrong turn somewhere- she and Jessi had ridden this trail before, so by the time Aela reached the end point, Jessi was dismounting with a triumphant grin. "Cassian got lost!" She said, running to meet the breathless and exhilarated Aela as she dismounted.
So she was going to get a kiss after all. Aela felt herself smile faintly. "Let's set up the picnic while we wait." The blanket was fully set up by the time Cassian reached them, sandwiches and pastries and iced tea laid out neatly.
"You lost!" Jessi said, running over to Cassian. "And you got lost- heh. Now you have to kiss Aela."
The queen had made her way over the the dismounting king as well, a triumphant glint in her eyes- despite it all, she could be competitive. "You know exactly where you can kiss me, your majesty," she said with a grin. She would not swear in front of Jessi, but she knew Cassian would know what she was talking about. "Cheaters never win." After having imparted her half-baked moral lesson she leaned forward expectantly, waiting for her prize.

Okay, maybe he made a wrong turn somewhere. He was practically designated to lose, having never been through this forest at all. It was still a nice ride though, he had to admit the brief walk in the woods on his own seemed like a welcome break from his daily life. It was nice, the way the oaks seemed to hold up the sky, the way the aspens and birches seemed to create a pattern somewhere, and after a while, he just gave up trying to win the race. They were probably already at the destination.
A snort from Safa made him stop, looking at the road ahead. Ugh, all mud and thickets...yup, time to turn back. He quickly found another path; perhaps at the end of this one? Following it to the end of the trees, he saw an opening, and heard the sound of voices. Yep, at least he wasn't too lost. Then again, the woods may be big but they weren't like the forests he had traveled to with his mother when she decided to visit her sister. These were just normal woods, not whatever spiritual woods those were back then.
He had at least the gall to leave an embarrassed grin on his face when he arrived. "Okay no one told me that I was supposed to take a right instead of following the path to the end," he rolled his eyes, "so you know, beginner's bad luck but I promise I'll win next time." He ruffled Jessi's hair with a chuckle, before looking up to Aela.
Oh? The smug look in her eyes really did rile him up, and of course, her gloating did push his buttons, even if they were supposed to be nice to each other. At least in front of the kid. He could almost laugh; so she wasn't just a goody-two-shoes all the time, huh? "Kiss your ass right?" he murmured lowly, out of Jessi's earshot. The man bit his lower lip, defiant gaze still meeting Aela's as the smirk appeared on his face.
Pressing a kiss to his palm, he slapped the other girl's ass with a laugh, before heading towards the picnic, tossing Aela a grin dripping with his own amusement. "Come on queenie, don't want our drinks to go warm now, do we?"

Aela could have murdered him then and there, her ass still smarting from the playful blow. Jessi stared between the two of them with wide eyes before bursting into giggles. She ran to the blanket, sitting down beside Cassian. "That wasn't a real kiss," she said with a faux pout.
"No, it wasn't," Aela said, resisting the urge to yank on one of Cassian's curls. Not only was it highly inappropriate... well, she had wanted a kiss. Had leaned in for it- only to be so slyly rejected. "And the cheater cheated his way out of paying his penalty."
Still, she let it drop, keeping her gaze pointedly away from Cassian as they ate. Of course Aela wasn't that upset about the kiss- it was mostly about the embarrassment, right? She and Jessi discussed what they could do for the rest of their time together, sipping their iced teas and munching on cinnamon apple tarts under the steadily warming sunshine.
"How was your breakfast?" Jessi asked Cassian after they had finished eating, as she stretched out on the blanket in the sun. Aela had pulled out her book, packed away in her small riding back, and was leaning back against a tree trunk as she read. Jessi looked ready to take a nap, but she continued her chatter. "Mine was great. What was your favorite food?"

Cassian laughed. Not the kind of small chuckle he usually did in public, but a genuine, bright laugh. He was already finding the situation humorous, but the murderous glare and embarrassed expression on Aela's face made it even better. Even Jessi was giggling. Okay, maybe today wouldn't be so horrible after all. Oh yeah, he was going to milk this, now that he knew exactly how to push on her buttons. Turns out she was plenty easier to embarrass than he thought. Why bother getting drunk with the boys naked in a hot tub if a couple of sex jokes and messing around would do?
He did feel a little bad though, but then again, she was sort of asking for it, quite literally. "Oh, did you want me to kiss your boo boo?" he gave her a cheeky smile, already lying on his side on the picnic mat as he grabbed a pastry, "if you roll over I can kiss your....uh...butt, again." He wasn't going to swear in front of the little girl. He stuck out his tongue at Aela, before shoving the tart in his mouth. Honestly, her embarrassment made the tart taste sweeter.
The young man flipped onto his back after finishing his food, turning to Jessi as she spoke. "It was really good, I don't usually get apple pie for breakfast. It's like having dessert all the time. Definitely a perk."
He hummed at the child's question; favorite foods were always hard to choose. "Our cook always made a really decent oxtail stew," he offered, "it's...not really food that my family would eat. I think it's sort of considered peasant food? But they made it with the leftover scraps of meat, so you know, the tail, and beans and I'm not really sure what else they put in it. I used to sneak downstairs and they'd let me have some.
It wasn't exactly anything fancy, but it had been warm, and the kitchen staff were always so nice. They'd all sit together and eat and laugh as a young Cassian tried their food, constantly asking questions. It was a fond memory, at least.
"What's yours?" he turned to Jessi.

Aela's eye twitched faintly at the insinuation and the tongue that Cassian stuck out in the direction. If Jessi wasn't there, she would have kicked him it. As it was, she turned herself away from Cassian and buried her nose in her book again.
"That sounds yummy," Jessi said, watching the clouds drift overhead. "I like candy, annnnnd I like jellied doughnuts, and I like apples, and I like fresh baked bread. I can't pick a favorite." She pointed up at one of the clouds with a small hand.
"Doesn't that cloud look like a bunny? I've always wanted a bunny, but my parents think a dog is enough for me right now. My dog's name is Reginald. Do you have any pets? Did you ever used to?"

He chuckled. Jellied donuts were great. He personally loved sweets, but the sour ones. Lemon flavoured things were great. "Freshly baked bread sounds nice," he offered, "maybe next time we can make jellied donuts. I'm sure it isn't that hard. We can figure it out when you come over." He had to admit, he really liked this little girl. She always had something to say.
Cassian looked up, his eyes squinting. Maybe light fairies found this okay, but personally the sky was always a bit too blinding at first. He frowned, trying to figure out which one exactly looked like a rabbit. He could see one that vaguely fit the profile...maybe that one? Still, Reginald was a funny name for a dog. All he could imagine now was a dog wearing a top hat with a moustache and a monocle.
"Um, not really," he frowned. Did his father's occasionally imported monsters count as pets? "There...was a cat that came around a lot, and we had a little place for him to sleep and he kept trying to come into our house, but my father wasn't exactly fond of animals. We weren't allowed to let it in when he was around."
"Since you're asking all the questions, I think I deserve to ask one too," he chuckled, rolling over to rest on his stomach, "tell me, if you could go anywhere in the world just to see what it's like, where would you go?"

"Heizoek!" Jessi said immediately. "I want to see the mountains. What about you, Aela?"
Aela started, pulled out of her book by the question. "Uhh... Maline, probably. I feel like... well, I feel like the ocean would be lovely there. Bluer... and less muddy than it can get around here." It wasn't like she had been to the ocean often, captive as she had been to the castle and to the city as a whole. "But I'd go anywhere. It's been years since I left Pyxis."
She cleared her throat, turning to Cassian. "What about you, darling husband? Where would you go?" Her tone was still a little frosty around the endearment, her sulkiness clearly not abated by the food and sunshine.

Cassian nodded at Jessi's comment. Heizoek always did seem like a land of mystery; he had heard of the marvels and of the great beasts that lived there, and that their people lived extremely different lives than people here. It was an interesting place for sure. He was surprised that Aela would want to visit Maline though. Not surprised really–Maline was a beautiful country, he had visited once or twice with his father–but the fact that they both had a desire to see the ocean on the opposite side was...weird. What a coincidence.
He had always found peace by the sea, even if the bay at Vela wasn't nearly as wide and open as Maline would be. He was tempted to say Nyre–wasn't that where he had always planned on settling?–but that seemed like he was just asking for her judgment. Everyone knew that Nyre was known for being even more of a party city than even Vela.
The man took a moment to think. He wasn't going to say Maline either, he had already seen it and well, it'd be weird to answer the same thing as his beloved wife, so he decided against it. She was still clearly bitter over the joke he played earlier, but he ignored the ice in her tone.
"Guivre maybe?" he replied, an almost wistful tone in his voice, "I know it's all just....snow, but...I heard in the winters they don't get any sun, and in the summer, they have weeks where there's no night at all. I wonder what that's like, and they say that sometimes, you can see the spirits dance in the sky. I don't know what that means, but I want to see it."

"Sounds beautiful," Aela said, almost wistfully. There was a point they connected on- a desire to travel, to see the world and experience it's unique wonders. Jessi jumped in with a speech about how she wanted to make snowfairies and have snowball fights, and Aela lapsed back into silence, smiling fondly at the girl.
After a while, they packed up the picnic, and Aela slipped the basket over her arm as she mounted her horse again. They rode a reasonable trot back to the castle, not racing in case Cassian got lost again. Aela rode ahead of the King and behind Jessi, tilting her head back to catch the sunlight on her face.
When they got back to the stables and took their saddles off their horses, Jessi took her leave, citing a need to take a nap after all that sunshine. Aela bid her goodbye and moved to brush the horses, evidently planning on taking her time in the stables. "Any exciting plans for the afternoon, Cassian?" She asked casually, thankfully less icy than she'd been before. The ride home had helped to melt away some of the bitterness.

Cassian chuckled at that. Snow fairies and snowball fights, that would be fun. He closed his eyes for a moment, leaning back into the grass. This wasn't too bad. Out of all the days he had been in this castle, this little outing was...nice, even if he'd never admit it out loud. The sunshine really was quite nice. Warm. The breezes had a different kind of feeling than the cool breezes of the evening. It almost made him miss home, just a little bit. The sea salt smell on the wind was different there, even if the sea wasn't really that far from Pyxis either.
It didn't take long before they were all ready to head back. Cassian had to admit, that the nice weather had taken his mind off of whatever worries and self-pity he had before. It really did clear his head, just a little bit. It was nice to be riding with Safa again, and he was already preparing a next outing, to simply get lost in this forest instead of wandering the halls of the stuffy castle. At least out here, he could forget everything, all his duties and responsibilities and those stupid meetings. Here, he could sort of be himself again.
As they neared the castle, the brief feeling of freedom slowly disappeared, and the weight of his many facades seemed to return. Jessi quickly bid them goodbye, and then it was the two of them again. He could feel the energy shift. It wasn't as if he was purposely trying to make Aela's life miserable, it just seemed that every time they spoke, it just naturally happened.
At least when she asked her question, there wasn't any malice to it anymore. Oh, so she wasn't still angry at him? He chuckled quietly under his breath as he continued to brush his horse.
Taking the saddle off, he looked at Aela, raising his brows. "What, did you want to join me in my naked hot tub with a bottle of whisky?" the amusement was evident in his teasing tone. That wasn't really his plan, but hey, that was probably what she assumed, wasn't it? She certainly accused him of it enough. The man shrugged, deciding to be a little less...mean.
"Not sure actually, might go back to bed," he replied evenly, "...and you?"

Aela rolled her eyes, hand gently cupping the side of her mare's- Lily's- long face as she brushed out her mane with practiced strokes. "I prefer not to drink my day away, thanks," she said dryly, but still without much malice. She seemed as tired as he did, her golden eyes focusing on her horse as she packed away the brush and held up a few treats for the mare to take from her hands.
"If you go back to bed, though, I'll be sure not to bother you. You got up early enough that I expect you're tired." Finally, the Queen turned back to Cassian, dusting off her hands on her simple skirt. "I don't really have any plans, I guess. I might go read in the library. Or go for a walk. I really don't know."
Even that wasn't appealing at the moment. She wished she wasn't trapped in these walls, that she could freely wander the city. But alas, here she was, living the same few days doing the same few things. Aela watched him closely, an errant black curl falling down over her smooth brown forehead. "I should give you a good kick in the groin for acting so... flippant in front of Jessi- she does not need to see you smack my ass."

Oh. His judgement was clearly a bit off, because it seemed like she was still a bit angry over that. "You did tell me to kiss your ass, don't forget that," he grinned. Boy did he love getting on her nerves. "If you want, I can still give it another kiss," he teased, "that's one thing I think I'm decent at. Kissing ass." He meant it both literally and metaphorically, but she didn't have to know that.
The man continued brushing his own horse. "You know, you're a lot easier to tolerate when you're less anal," oh yeah, he was definitely on a roll with butt jokes, "maybe one day you'll take that stick out and you know...enjoy yourself or something. Who knows. Maybe you should try day drinking. It'd loosen you up enough to take a joke."
Was he being too mean? She was just easy to tease. He turned to her, a little more serious now. "But seriously, are you angry because I slapped your ass or because you were expecting a kiss, because right now I can't really tell," he was curious, after all. She did lean in, he had noticed that.

Cassian made her thank the spirits daily for her dark skin, which hid the infernal blush that stupidly crept onto her face at least several times a week around him. If she was expecting a kiss, it was just because it had been promised to her.
And... well, it wasn't fair that Cassian left her with these memories of her wedding night and then did nothing more. They seemed to plague her, slipping into her head when she was reading her romance novels or even just eating lunch by herself. Memories of his lips on her neck, grazing her collarbone, brushing across the swell of her breast-
Spirits, why did those thoughts have to come back now? Aela ground her teeth together, looking away. "You've touched my ass before, it's not like I mind it. And it's not like I wanted a kiss from you." Her voice was a little too forceful, too insistent on that point. "I just was annoyed that..." That what? What could she say instead? "That you one-upped me in front of my cousin. That's all."

He couldn't stifle the smirk that appeared on his face. It sounded like she was lying. Her tone was a lot more snappy than if it had just been 'one-upping' her in front of her cousin. If that had been it, she'd likely have forgotten it now. It wasn't as if he hadn't embarrassed her before in front of the kid, and well, Cassian could imagine. Aela wasn't blushing, but the expression on her face said that this was more than that.
He knew she didn't like him. That was made clear enough in every interaction they had, but...well, he wasn't going to flatter himself or anything, but she had practically avoided him after their little...fight, her insistence on doing his 'husband duties' had stopped completely after, and here she was, saying that she didn't mind that he slapped her ass even though she had been infuriated just moments before. Did she want him in bed? It wasn't as if the few times they had slept together were particularly...eventful; frankly they were more awkward than anything else, considering how it was treated as some sort of duty. He was sure that she felt just as awkward, that this was just some duty off a checklist...right?
Damn, women were fucking confusing. He was getting confused just thinking about it. Whatever, she was probably just using this as an excuse to get annoyed at him again.
Rolling his eyes, he moved towards her, his eyes gleaming. "You know, if you wanted to kiss me, you can just say it in a lot less words, right?" he smirked, practically trapping her against the fence inside the stable.
