Rose slammed back as the signal came, feeling the man jerk away from her and the knife fall to the floor. She stumbled forward unsteadily, feeling Mars' hand steady her. She clung to his hand, grateful to be out of that situation and feel she could catch her breath once again.
"Thanks," she whispered hoarsely, distracted by the anger of Jack's thoughts as he and Mars converged on the now disarmed Bradley. She hung father back this time, back against the wall, to stay out of further danger as the rest of the scene unfolded.

Shit, he thought, as he held Rose's hand tightly, the water whipping around grasping the man who had tried to threaten her. Oh he was going to kill him. Mars' own thoughts weren't far from Jack's; anyone who threatened his crew. Like it or not, Rose was part of it now. Jack was already holding a blade, stalking towards the other man, but as Mars moved forward, the man hung back.
"How dare you," he seethed, slamming a foot into the man's chest, "you fucking light fairies think you can fool us so easy huh? I could've forgiven you for your little stunt with the ship since no one's hurt, but this..."
A ball of water was floating dangerously close to the other man's face. "You're not much of a sailor, Bradley," he sneered, "but you ever wonder what it feels like to drown? They say it's a pretty horrible death, you just have to wait until the water gets in your lungs and there's no hope for you anymore, but you'll just keep....fighting....it."
The man's glare didn't waver, but there was now a tinge of fear as the ball of water neared his face. "You're not going to kill me," he stated, "you're too soft for that shit."
He chuckled. "You must not know me much if that's what you think," he mused, "maybe if you apologize to my friend over there, and she doesn't want you dead, I'll think about sparing you. Better start grovelling."
With that, the water began to force itself down the man's throat.

Rose could not see what was happening, but she could hear the gargling and sloshing in front of her, and the panic in Bradley's mind was overwhelming her. Strong emotions always gripped her, much like yelling drew people's attention, and she could sense the fear and desperation permeating her mind from Bradley.
He thought- probably rightfully so- that he was going to die. Rose could feel the thoughts of his crew and his woman in Bradley's mind, and suddenly she couldn't handle experiencing this man's dying moments with him. Rose squeezed Mars' hand, leaning closer to him. "Please don't kill him," she said, her expression as pained as the drowning sailor's.

It was tempting to watch the man drown. People like Bradley were the reason why the poor stayed poor. He was a traitor in more ways than one; the fact that he got rich off of tricking other sailors and pirates into mistakes and the fact that he sold people out for the sake of money...he was a terrible person and frankly, he hated everything the man stood for.
Yet, when Rose touched his arm, the anger dissipated and he stopped, pulling back his magic, only to look at the young woman with a concerned expression. "Okay," he replied quietly as he took a step back.
"You should thank her for sparing you today," Mars' voice was cold, "and trust me, if I ever see you again, I might not be so nice. Just remember, it isn't that easy to kill me, asshole, and I trust Jack will let the others know what happened today, hm?"
Jack turned to Mars with a smirk. "Oh they already know," he sneered, spitting on the other man coughing on the ground, "if he's anywhere on our docks, he'll wish he was dead."
Mars nodded, before turning to leave, holding Rose's hand still as they stepped back out into the street and into the fray of things. He turned to Rose with a frown. "Hey, you okay?" he spoke softly, "I'm sorry I put you in danger, I didn't think he'd stoop so low."

"I'm okay," she reassured him, calmer now that she had distanced herself from Bradley. "It's not that I mind so much that you were going to kill him- he probably deserved it." His thoughts and general demeanor had been nasty, and Rose hadn't like him any more than the others had.
She cleared her throat before continuing. "It's just- I couldn't handle his thoughts. When someone is that desperate or angry, it's almost like I am them. I can't block out their pain or fear or fury, and it would have felt like I died with him, at least until it was over. I wasn't prepared for that, that's all."

He frowned. "I'm sorry," he replied, "I didn't know you felt it too. I should've been more careful." A sigh left his mouth as he scratched his head, thinking over what had just happened. Sometimes things just got messy, even if Mars didn't intend them to. He was lucky today; Bradley never did have the guts to do anything, but he knew eventually, his luck would run out one of these days.
"Are there ways to block out people's thoughts?" he mused, "like some mind fairy technique to pick and choose what you want to listen to?"

"Not that I know of," Rose said. "But I have no training. All I've learned is things I've figured out myself. I've never met another mind fairy." Most of the time she could choose which voices to focus in on, but she could never block out thoughts entirely- and when the thoughts were that loud, they were all-consuming.
"Don't blame yourself," she said, elbowing his side with a faint smile. "You've never had to consider another person hearing thoughts before. However, now that this is all over, I'd really like to go to sleep."

Mars seemed to mull over her answer. "You ever think of leaving Maline and I dunno, look for a mentor or something?" he offered, "I know Lacaille has some kind of school for fairies, but Nyre too...that's where all the other mind fairies are, right? I could take you there if you want, help you with your training and all."
He gave her hand a squeeze. "Do you want me to walk you home?" he offered, "if not, there's always a room for you on my ship. Consider yourself an honorary member of the crew, if you don't want to be a full member, that is."

"That would be nice of you," Rose said. "Adelphie will wonder where I am. If you can take me to the tavern by the port, that would be great."
The other topics required more thought. She had thought about finding a mentor, but hadn't had a reliable way to get to one until now. And she had had a lot of fun playing pirate- until there had been a knife at her throat. "I'll think about the other things you said. I'll probably end up on the crew, but there are loose ends I need to tie up here. Plus Adelphie will hunt me down if I leave without warning."

"Sure," he had a wide grin on his face. He initially assumed she'd take more convincing, but it was nice that she already wanted to come along. The walk wasn't long, and the glow of the tavern seemed warm and welcoming.
"So...will I see you again tomorrow?" he piped up, a smile still on his face.

Rose smiled, amused at the hopefulness in his thoughts. "Sure," she agreed easily. "I'll be at the same stall as before. If you're free you can come eat dinner here- Adelphie will think you're my boyfriend and she'll feed you for free."
With a little wave, she moved back to the safety of her well-known tavern, where plump, good-natured Adelphie met her and insisted on feeding her another round of dinner, lambasting her with questions about where she'd been and what she'd been up to.

He grinned. "I'll take that as a yes," he hummed, leading Rose inside with a chuckle. As he sat down with Rose and Adelphie, he listened to them chat, eating his fish and chips in peace. He chuckled at the questions and at Rose's answers, glad to simply listen.
Before long, dinner was over, and Mars was saying a farewell to Rose and Adelphie, heading back to the ship.
The next morning, he was at the stall once more, waiting for Rose to appear.

Adelphie seemed nice enough- she did indeed refer to Mars as Rose's boyfriend repeatedly, bustling back and forth to order them food from the tavern. It seemed she was a true business woman- running the tavern and several stalls- and that she had taken in Rose several years prior.
Rose made her way back to the stall in the morning, hand on the wall to guide herself, and bag of wares slung over her shoulder. When she reached the table she smiled faintly, head turning in Mars's direction. "You must be eager to see me, if you're here already. That, or you're highly invested in my jewelry."
She sat down on her stool, drawing out pieces of merchandise and feeling them to determine what they were before setting them out on the table.

He laughed, eyes brightening as he caught sight of Rose. "Oh, I think we both know what I'm here for," he teased, before sitting down on the second chair of the stall. "So....did you make up your mind? What did Adelphie say?"

"I thought about it before I went to sleep, and again this morning, and I decided I'd go with you. I've got nothing better to do here, anyway, and I've been stuck in this job for too many years. Adelphie is upset but she's also secretly delighted because she thinks I've turned into a romantic, dashing off with a 'handsome young sailor'."
Rose set out the last of the jewelry, dusting off her hands. "I can pack my meager belongings tonight, if that works for you. Or if you'll be here a few more days, I can wait."

He laughed. "Did you tell her your dashing young sailor was a pirate?" he mused, before looking out to the coastline, not far away. The skies were clear and blue, barely a wisp of cloud ahead.
"Well we're going to Lacaille to deliver some goods to a friend of mine, and the weather's good this week. Not a storm cloud in sight; the sooner we leave, the better at this rate, but we can wait if you need more time. I've set up a room for you already; trust me, you wouldn't want to share the common room with the lads." A chuckle left his mouth. The boys were fun, but they really were rowdy sometimes.

"I did not tell her that, or she wouldn't let me leave," Rose laughed, leaning back against the stone wall. To some it might seem crazy that she would leave her only home without much of a second thought, but it was only natural to Rose. She had always resisted putting down roots.
For her, and for her powers too, it was easier to have no attachments. Easier to float through life as one who perceived instead of experienced. And now there was a better opportunity for her elsewhere- she was grateful for Adelphie, but there was no deep sense of grief at leaving her. "We can go tonight, then. Go take care of your business and meet me back here when the work day is done."

Mars grinned. "That sounds good," he spoke, "I'll pick you up at sunset and we can set sail. I'll go get your room ready!" He gave Rose a playful bow before disappearing into the crowd.
