They couldn't have gotten back any faster, Mars thought dryly, as he ushered them quickly onto the ship. They needed to leave as soon as possible. He breathed a sigh of relief as the child climbed on board, with no other incident in sight. The crew still needed to load up everything, that was for sure, but it was better iff the child didn't leave the ship again, at least not now.
As Elise began to explain, Mars stopped her. "I don't go back on my promises," he replied seriously, "I'll take you wherever you need to go so that's up to you, but you need to tell me if there's anything else I should prepare for. A captain's only as good as what he knows, and I can't protect you or Charlie if there's something missing from the picture."
He knew it was a bit of a double standard, that he hadn't told anything to Elise, and frankly, he owed her the truth, but it would only cause her even more strife than it did now.
"Did the Lord who sired him have powers like this?" he frowned, "I've heard stories about some of the nobles being powerful, but if he's already creating something like that at his age...that's extremely unusual, you have to know that. I got my powers young too, but I can't do anything close to what he did today."

"Lord Wharton doesn't have powers like that... as far as I know," Elise said evasively, glancing away. She had hooked up with Cato a few times in the same time period, but... well, there was no way to know. It was safer, and easier, to claim Lord Wharton as the father.
Well, it had been. He was the one more likely to legitimize Charlie out of desperation for an heir. Cato was young- he most definitely was married with a child by now. He would have no need for a bastard. Besides, Elise had spent ten years convincing herself the baby was Lord Wharton's. It couldn't be any other way.

Huh. That made no sense to Mars at all. "Usually if it's a dormant bloodline, their powers wouldn't be so pronounced," he murmured, glancing to Charlie again, "you know he'll need to learn how to control his powers, right? I don't think I've even seen a grown adult do something like that, and he's just a kid." He knew that Lacaille had a university with the space specifically for kids like him, but Lacaille wasn't exactly safe for them anymore. The lord would certainly find out, and well...he wanted to stay alive and free, thank you very much.
"There's somewhere in Kama that might be able to help him," Mars pointed out, "I haven't been to their capital in years, but they're famous for their research center in magic. Maybe we can get you can get help there." He wasn't 100% sure that was a viable plan, but it was better than nothing.
Mars knew nothing about dark fairies and their powers, but if anything was true about magic, it was that any power without control was dangerous for everyone involved.

If that was the case... his family was known for their dark magic. Well, his paternity was a minor detail. Even if Cato was Charlie's father, it was inconsequential for them now. What mattered was getting Charlie's powers under control. "He shouldn't be this strong," Elise said, rubbing her forehead. "Especially when I have no training and can't help him."
At least there were options. "We can head for Kama," she agreed reluctantly. "If you're okay with that. I'm not going to hand him over to be experimented on, but if they can help him... It's worth a shot. Before this gets worse."
Elise was unaware that soon enough half of Lacaille and Esso'tera would be after Charlie, for varying reasons. Right now she just wanted to process this newest development. "Are we still staying here for a few days? Or leaving sooner?"

That was interesting–baffling really–but then again, there were times when fairies were just born talented. He could be jealous really, but Mars put that thought aside. Whether that power just skipped a generation or not, the child would be in danger if anyone found out what he could do before he could control and understand it.
Kama sounded good. He didn't know many people there but from what he heard, they were much friendlier than those in Esso'tera. He had heard something about the jungle people being hippies; he hoped that was true.
"We need to pick up extra supplies if we're heading to Kama," he spoke, "I'll talk to the rest of the crew, but if we're heading that direction, we'll need a day or two to gather more supplies. We'll need to go through Nyre's isles for that since we can't go through Lacaille's bay. Kama's farther away than Maline, I'm afraid."
He immediately went to look for the rest of his crew, speaking with them about the change of plans.

Elise spent the rest of the day playing with Charlie, intending to keep a close eye on him. He seemed to have no concept of what he'd done, babbling on like everything was normal. Thankfully, the evening and the following days were peaceful, as much as life on a pirate ship could be peaceful.
